Plot Summary

Austria's young Empress Sisi (played by Romy Schneider) visited Hungary and felt that the people here had no political enthusiasm for her. She deeply fell in love with this country and its people, which was the only way for her to escape the pressure of royal life in Vienna. However, while she and Count Anderson were appeasing the unwilling nobles in Hungary, Empress Sophie (played by Magda Schneider) was spreading rumors between Sisi and the Count. Franz (played by Karlheinz Bhm) has always been immersed in national affairs, allowing his mother Sophie to intervene in court affairs, even including the issue of raising their daughter. When Cici was diagnosed with serious pulmonary tuberculosis, Franz unexpectedly obeyed her mother's wishes and asked the doctor to take her daughter away from Cici. Sisi was sent to a distant island to recuperate. With the careful care of her mother, she gradually recovered from loneliness and helplessness. After recovering from illness, Sisi accompanied Franz on a visit to northern Italy. The nationalists there strongly opposed Austrian rule and showed great hostility towards the entire royal family. However, when Sisi and her daughter reunited at St. Mark's Square, the Italian people were inspired by Sisi's kindness and warmly welcomed her and her daughter's reunion.
