Plot Summary

This film is adapted from two novellas published by Mo Yan in 1986, "Red Sorghum" and "Sorghum Wine". Because of a mule, the parents of "my grandmother" Jiu'er (played by Gong Li) asked her to marry a 50 year old leprosy patient who owns a distillery. When Jiu'er was getting married in a sedan chair, she was intercepted by a robber on the way. One of the sedan bearers, Yu Zhan'ao (played by Jiang Wen), repelled the robber, and Jiu'er began to like him. Three days later, Jiu'er returned to his hometown to visit his parents. The man carrying the sedan suddenly rushed out of the sorghum field and snatched Jiu'er away. They intermarried in the field of sorghum. When Jiu'er returned to the distillery, she found that her husband, who had leprosy, had died. "My grandmother" supported the Li family's distillery, and soon Yu Zhan'ao officially became "my grandfather" and created a unique method for brewing good liquor called "Eighteen Red". During the War of Resistance Against Japan, "my grandfather" and "my grandmother" collaborated to compose a sad song.
