Plot Summary
The film mainly tells the story of Mary Surat, who was convicted as an "accomplice" in the assassination of President Lincoln, played by Robin Wright. James McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, the lawyer for Mary Surat. This idealistic former war hero reluctantly defended Mary Surat. However, during this process, he gradually came to believe that Mary Surat was innocent. President Lincoln was assassinated, and the entire United States was outraged. Seven men and one woman were arrested and charged with murder. The story of this film is about the trial of the "female accomplice" Mary Surat (played by Robin Wright). James McAvoy plays Frederick Aiken, a 28 year old former war hero and lawyer for Mary Surat. In the process of defense, he gradually discovered that Mary Surat was innocent, she was just a bait and hostage set up by the police to arrest the real culprit - her son John. But amidst the nationwide opposition, Mary Surat must rely on her lawyer Frederick Aiken to expose the facts and save her life. After the Lincoln assassination, seven men and one woman were immediately arrested and charged with conspiring to assassinate the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State of the United States. The only woman accused is Mary Surat (played by Robin Wright), 42 years old, who owns a boarding house. It was here that John Wilcox Booth (played by Toby Cabell) met with others and planned the assassination. Former American Civil War soldier and newly hired lawyer Frederick Aiken (played by James McAvoy), as a 28 year old combat hero, reluctantly takes on the task of defending Surat in a military court. Aiken gradually realized that Surat was wrongly accused, and her arrest was likely just used as bait and hostage to lure out the true accomplice who escaped in the mass arrest: Surat's son, John Surat (played by Johnny Simmons). James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn will star in a historical film about the assassination of Lincoln called "The Conspiracy," directed by actor and director Robert Redford. Among them, Robin Walter Penn will play the only woman in the small gang convicted of murdering the president - Mary Surratt, while James McAvoy will play a Civil War hero named Frederick Aiken, an idealist who firmly believes that Mary Surratt is wrongly accused. Accomplice "is written by James Solomon and will start filming in October this year. A one sentence comment on historical facts and fiction is not well handled, resulting in a lack of flavor in historical facts, while fiction is not too bold, neglecting one aspect and losing the other. ——If the Chicago Tribune could use a better starting point to describe the Lincoln assassination, perhaps the audience would be more interested in it. ——The main investment company behind the production of "Female Conspiracy" in "USA Today" is "American Film Company" founded by Joe Ricketts, which has a mission to tell people accurate American history. The company has hired Pulitzer Prize winner James McPherson, expert Thomas Turner specializing in the Lincoln assassination case, and American historian Colonel Fred Borch to form an advisory team for "Female Conspiracy" in order to provide audiences with a precise history for this film. Joe Ricketts said, "Our country's history often attracts more attention than novels. The Mary Surat case is such a story of great impact and significance." Redford's interpretation of the Lincoln assassination as a minor character has been missing for three years since the less successful "Lion in the Sheep's Mouth" (2007), which closely follows current themes. In fact, during this period, he was not idle either. He turned his gaze to the past and prepared to present a film titled "The Female Conspiracy" set against the backdrop of the 146th anniversary of Lincoln's assassination. There have been many film and television works about Lincoln himself and the assassination of Lincoln, but overall they are a recognition of Lincoln and a panoramic display of the entire historical event. However, this time, Robert Redford focused his camera on a minor figure in the event, Mary Surat, who was then considered a "conspirator" in the murder, and attempted to recreate a more realistic social reality behind a political murder through the judicial confrontation surrounding the incident. Redford also stated that what attracted him to this story was its obscurity. "What fascinated me the most about the project of this film was that this story is not well-known, yet it is also a story that should be remembered by everyone. As for Lincoln, there are very few things people don't know. Therefore, if it were just a direct depiction of historical events, I wouldn't make such a movie. For me, what attracted me was to delve into another story behind this story, to the emotional direction pointed out by this story." In order to truly express the emotions and atmosphere of the events at that time, Robert Redford and his team put in a lot of effort, such as moving in the courtroom where the story unfolded. Many minds. How to make the court as vivid as it was in that era is a challenge. We must accurately create an atmosphere, a kind of public outrage surrounding this event, which should be an almost barbaric chaotic reaction, because this is the national sentiment of the entire country during that period. At the same time, from a narrative perspective, Redford also has a "position" problem that needs to be solved. He needs to maintain the objectivity of this film to avoid giving people the impression that this film is purely from the perspective of the accused and selectively expressed. I tried my best to prevent this impression from arising. From the results, unless you deliberately have this biased feeling, there shouldn't be such an unnecessary impression. In fact, this film is about a coalition soldier serving as a defense lawyer to handle a case that he doesn't want to participate in. Gradually, this character never wants to handle it, but realizes that he should participate because he realizes that the charges against the suspect are not true. This is a bigger event that concerns the US Constitution. "From Robert Redford's acting methodology, we can see that the core of the story is the suspect Mary Surat and the defense lawyer whose understanding of her slowly changes. For this reason, Redford hired Robin Wright, who has extensive experience in Hollywood acting, to play the role of Mary Surat. Although this name may sound unfamiliar at first, the mention of Jane in Forrest Gump (1994) may immediately evoke memories of her performance. And her dramatic marriage with Sean Penn, which had multiple attempts to divorce but never left, was also a traditional Hollywood gossip show. However, after officially ending this tumultuous marriage in 2010, White was able to fully portray the complex emotions of a suspect who was widely despised in "Female Conspiracy". The role of a lawyer is portrayed by James McAvoy. In 2007 and 2008, with his works "Atonement" (2007) and "Wanted" (2008), he gained a lot of attention and popularity. This British literary youth was once considered a promising and popular young man. However, later on, his popularity significantly slowed down and his popularity greatly decreased, while the title of popular young actor was replaced by new forces such as "Joseph". However, from movies like 'The Last Stand' (2009), you can still feel his artistic temperament and acting skills. His role in 'The Concubine' is also a great opportunity for him to accumulate strength and once again conquer Hollywood with his temperament and acting skills. As an actor, Redford is also very confident in his choice of actors. "I am an actor myself, and I know that the acting stage is very important. In terms of the lead cast, I really value and devote myself to it, but I also enjoy the process. Without hesitation, I chose McEwey and Robin. Although there were many other actors who wanted to participate, in my mind, they were the best cast. In other films, you can see many of their performances. I value their diversity, as they have played many different roles. I have always believed that trying out more roles is a great job, which will make you more adaptable in your career." It seems that Redford. Fu has his own methodology for selecting actors, And did the selected McVoy and Robin meet Redford's expectations? Redford himself has given a positive answer, but the specific judgment still needs to wait for more audience members to evaluate in the cinema. The history of individual fate in the context of the Lincoln assassination always cuts off different layers of veils at different time periods. As a major event in American history, the Lincoln assassination has been stripped of multiple layers of veils, and people's understanding of the cause, effect, and context of this event has become more authentic. Redford's focus this time is more on the individual, the helplessness and confusion that individuals feel when they are involved in major events, and the important role that institutions and individuals under institutions play in maintaining social justice during this process. The pre screening of the film before its official large-scale release has received excellent reviews from the media and critics, and such works with a sense of weight are precisely the strengths of the more stable Redford. For the artistic McEvoy, it is like a fish in water, and for the audience, it is also an excellent opportunity to explore another side of major events in the United States. The behind the scenes footage: This film is actually the "debut" of "American Film Company", a newly established film company aimed at making more accurate films that restore the true face of American history in the past. ·This film is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 15th, which coincides with the 146th anniversary of Lincoln's assassination. ·Toby Cabell played John Wilcox Booth, the assassin of Lincoln, in the film. Kabel is not unfamiliar with such characters. In the movie "Alexander the Great" (2004), he also "assassinated" Alexander the Great's father, playing Bosalia as the assassin of Macedonian King Philip II. ·Mary Surat's family is in Clinton, which has been preserved as a museum. After Lincoln's assassination, this small town was temporarily renamed Robespierre, but in 1879, it was reverted back to its original name: Clinton.
