Plot Summary

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Maupassant, known as the "King of Short Stories". Veteran George Duvallo (played by Robert Pattinson) came to Paris alone from Africa after retiring and lived a difficult life as a railway station handyman. By chance, I met a former comrade in arms and with his help, I joined the French Life newspaper as an editor. I worked hard to become an important writer for the "Walther Gang" and participated in a defection conspiracy. With a beautiful appearance and some tricks to please women, Crotilde (played by Christina Ricci), Madeline (played by Uma Thurman), and Mrs. Walter (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) have all become sacrificial victims of his rise to fame. He shamelessly uses women to make a fortune, engages in speculation and adventure, and gradually enters high society. Eventually, he kidnaps the daughter of the newspaper owner Walter, Susan (played by Holliday Grainger), marries her and becomes the editor in chief of the newspaper, taking power, money, and fame into his pocket, and successfully achieves great success.
