Description

Plot Summary

In 1944, the German army and the Soviet Leningrad Front engaged in a series of battles over the Narva Isthmus. In July, the Soviet army captured Narva, an ancient city that had been the dividing line between Russia and the Western world for nine hundred years. The Tannenberg Line behind Narva was the last line of defense in the Estonian capital of Tallinn. A group of young Estonians in their early twenties volunteered to join the 20th SS Division of the Waffen SS and began to fight head-on against Soviet armored forces on the Eastern Front, fighting against Soviet occupation. This is not the first time Estonia has become a battlefield of war between East and West, Germans and Slavs. Starting from the ice battle at Lake Chud, this battle has lasted for over seven hundred years, and the Estonians caught in the middle are inevitably dragged into it by both sides, becoming victims of history. In September, due to Finland's announcement of the cessation of military cooperation with Germany and the signing of the Moscow Armistice Agreement, the German army, which was surrounded by enemies, decided to withdraw from Estonia. The Soviet army followed the German army all the way to the capital of Estonia, Tallinn. The soldiers of the Red Army, Yeshania (Russian Estonian), also witnessed firsthand that the blue, black, and white tricolor flag, which symbolized Estonian national independence, was finally replaced by the Soviet red flag on September 22 after being hung for four days in the symbol of Tallinn, Hermanta, on September 18, when the German army withdrew. The occupation of Tallinn was not the last battle between the Soviet Union and Germany in Estonia. In November, in the muddy and dense forests of Sarema Island, Yeshania soldiers braved the gunfire of German ships and expelled the last batch of German troops from Estonia. The large-scale war has finally come to an end, but peace and freedom have not yet arrived on this small land, and the pain brought by the war is still difficult to heal... This is the 1944 of the Estonians.
