Description
Plot Summary
In 1944, the US military began preparing for aviation and naval artillery fire from June 11th, destroying most of the ground fortifications on the island. On the 15th, the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions of the United States landed in the Charangano area on the west coast of Saipan Island and occupied the landing site in the evening. On that day and the night of the 16th, the Japanese army launched several small-scale counterattacks, but were all repelled. On the night of the 17th, the Japanese launched another counterattack and briefly broke into the US military position, but due to the lack of a follow-up team, they were repelled the next morning. After consolidating the landing site, the 27th Infantry Division landed to reinforce and rushed to repair the airport and deploy artillery. On June 19-20, the US and Japanese navies engaged in fierce battles in the waters west of the Mariana Islands, with the Japanese navy suffering a devastating defeat and the defending Japanese army completely isolated. On the 26th, the US military captured the high ground of Tapocho Mountain in the central part of the island, and then launched a northward attack. After 20 days of fierce fighting, the Japanese army suffered heavy casualties, with only 3000 remaining. On July 6th, Zhongyi Nanyun and the commander of the 43rd Division, Yoshitsugu Saito, committed suicide. The next morning, the remnants of the Japanese army counterattacked the American army and were completely annihilated. On the 9th, the US military occupied the entire island. In the Battle of Saipan, the Japanese army suffered over 41000 casualties and captured nearly 2000 people; The US military suffered over 16000 casualties. The US military seized Saipan Island, creating conditions for the capture of other islands in the Mariana Islands and providing a base for B-29 long-range bombers to bomb Japan's mainland.
