Description

Plot Summary

This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by German author Remag, and revolves around an ordinary German soldier named Paul Baumann (played by Richard Thomas) during World War I, serving as a small microcosm of the brutal war on the Western Front. The brutality and destructiveness of war completely shattered his heroism. Paul realized the terror of war and its devastation on human nature, from his obsession with war to witnessing the subsequent disillusionment. At the end, birds chirped in the deathly silence of the front line, and Paul followed the sound and searched for them. Suddenly, a battlefield report shattered the brief tranquility and harmony, and the film ended with 'All is calm on the western front'. The TV adaptation of "No War on the Western Front," directed by American director Delbert Mann in 1979, received multiple nominations at the Emmy Awards that year and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Film. The version filmed in 1930 has become a classic of anti war themes. Although this work is not as innovative in terms of art as the old one, the director still uses heavy brushstrokes and skilled techniques to express the absurdity and ruthlessness of war.
