Plot Summary

In the spring of 1922, writer Nick (played by Tobey Maguire) left his hometown full of hope and came to the emerging city of New York with the gold rush. Although jazz music was popular and stocks skyrocketed, there was a polarization between the rich and the poor, and people were trapped in debauchery. Nick gave up writing to pursue the American Dream and entered the securities market, moving into a bay near New York and becoming the neighbor of the mysterious billionaire Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). On the other side of the bay, Nick's cousin Daisy (played by Carey Mulligan) and her aristocratic husband Tom (played by Joel Edgerton) live. Nick is not only invited to a banquet, but Tom also takes him to find a mistress for pleasure. Nick gradually gets lost in this world full of charm and the illusion, love, and lies created by the wealthy. But only Gatsby is the most special, he is the only person who makes Nick feel hopeful in this lost city. Nick was invited to attend a feast at Gatsby's mansion and discovered the secret in Gatsby's heart. It turned out that he had always loved Daisy deeply, even though she did not wait for him to return after the war and instead married wealthy Tom. Gatsby firmly believed that their love would remain steadfast. As a witness to the love between Gatsby and Daisy, Nick finally sees through the empty emotions and lack of loyalty of this upper class society after Gatsby's murder, and is determined to stay away from the hustle and bustle, indifference, and false metropolis, and return to his hometown with a sense of sadness
