Description

Plot Summary

Directed by Ding Shanxi, this film follows the Japanese invasion of Shanghai on August 13, 1937. Xie Jinyuan, the commander of the 524th Regiment of the 88th Division of China, leads 480 young officers, known as 800 strong soldiers, to hold the Sihang Warehouse for three months in order to contain the Japanese army and cover the retreat of the Chinese army. The soldiers bravely killed the enemy, and the Girl Scouts risked their lives to deliver food and medicine to the defenders. When the diversionary mission was completed, the defenders retreated across Suzhou Bridge. The layout and technique of this film is completely different from "Heroes of the Past", limited to the Sihang Warehouse on the banks of the Suzhou River in Shanghai, where hundreds of Chinese soldiers engage in positional warfare against the surrounding Japanese army. The director, based on historical facts, utilized the presence of the British French Concession around the Sihang Warehouse and the Nationalist controlled area across the Suzhou River to depict the dramatic conflict caused by the different environments of war and peace on both sides of the Suzhou River. This portrayed the heroic spirit of the patriotic army in resisting aggressors and the atmosphere of the Shanghai people's support for the Nationalist garrison. The director grasped the factors of the conflict between the two sides, arranged numerous dangers, and used the montage editing technique of forward and backward shots of the Nationalist Army crossing the Suzhou River in the midst of gunfire and bullets, where the public was worried about the soldiers, to create thrilling scenes and push the plot to a climax. This incident was brought to the screen in 1938 as a silent film, written by Yang Hansheng, directed by Ying Yunwei, starring Yuan Muzhi and Chen Boer. It is one of the more famous "rear area films" during the Anti Japanese War, in which the details of the Girl Scouts risking their lives to send the national flag to the brave soldiers are extremely tragic and infectious. The film was extremely sensational in the rear area and Hong Kong at that time, and received a warm response in Southeast Asia and even Western Europe.
