Plot Summary

This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Lin Haiyin. The little girl Lin Yingzi (played by Shen Jie) lived in Nancheng, Beijing fifty years ago. There lived a crazy woman named Xiuzhen (played by Zhang Min) near their yard. Xiuzhen's husband was killed for participating in the student movement, and her child was nowhere to be found. As a result, she fell ill and often treated Yingzi as her own child, "Xiaoguizi". Yingzi also liked Xiuzhen and promised to help her find Xiaoguizi. Yingzi has a tough little friend named Niu who often gets beaten and scolded by her godfather while studying acting. Yingzi accidentally discovers that Niu has a birthmark on Xiaoguizi and helps them recognize each other as mother and daughter. After Yingzi started elementary school, her family moved to Changdian. In the abandoned courtyard outside her home, Yingzi discovered a pile of grass where a thief (played by Zhang Fengyi) was hiding stolen goods. The thief had to do shameful things to support her younger brother's education, but Yingzi did not see him as a bad person. Soon after, the maid Su Mama returned home, her father passed away, and Yingzi's childhood seemed to come to an end
