Description
Plot Summary
In the 1930s, rural boy Tang Shuisheng came to Shanghai to seek refuge with his sixth uncle (Li Xuejian). With his recommendation, he became a personal servant of the singing and dancing queen Xiao Jinbao (Gong Li). Xiao Jinbao is the woman of Tang Laoye (Li Baotian), a dominant figure in Shanghai, but she has an affair with her subordinate Song Erye, who has long coveted Tang Laoye's position. Uncle Liu's sudden death made Mr. Tang alert, and he took Xiao Jinbao, Shui Sheng, and others to a small island where only the widow Cuihua and her two children were hiding. He ordered the killing of familiar faces on the island. Xiao Jinbao gained a different understanding of life through her interactions with Cuihua, and gradually became very dissatisfied with Tang Laoye's cruelty. However, her fate was also in the hands of Tang Laoye.
