Plot Summary

During the Warring States period, the extraordinary figure Guiguzi had two proud disciples, one was Sun Tzu and the other was Pang Juan. Pang Juan emerged from the mountains before Sun Bin, and Guiguzi passed on the lost "Art of War" to Sun Bin alone. Pang Juan led the Wei army to a stalemate with the Chu army in Fangcheng. Sun Bin quoted the "Art of War" by Sun Tzu and proposed the strategy of "climbing the house and pulling the ladder", which led to Pang Juan's great defeat of the Chu army. Pang Juan was jealous of Sun Bin's talent and "hidden a knife in a smile" falsely accused Sun Bin. Sun Bin was sentenced to Bin punishment. Pang Juan's strategist Gong Sunyue told Sun Bin about Pang Juan's conspiracy in order to obtain the beautiful woman Zhong Liqiu. Sun Bin pretended to be sick but not crazy, and burned all the copied military strategies. Zhong Liqiu hoped that Sun Bin was not truly insane and confided his true feelings to him. However, Sun Bin remained insane and secretly monitored Sun Bin's pet Juan, believing it to be true. After learning of Sun Bin's feigned madness, Zhong Lichun, the sister of Zhong Liqiu, came alone to Sun Bin's hometown of Qi and requested that the General of Qi, Tian Ji, rescue Sun Bin. Tian Ji sent his gatekeeper, Qinxie, to the state of Wei. With the help of Qinxie, Sun Bin escaped from the state of Wei with the help of the "golden cicada shedding its shell". Tian Ji loves horses and places heavy bets on horse racing with the King of Qi. Sun Bin uses the strategy of "Li Daitao Jing" to make Tian Ji win. Tian Ji told King Wei of Qi about Sun Bin's plan, and King Wei of Qi highly valued Sun Bin. Sun Bin commanded the Qi army to "surround Wei to save Zhao", "capture thieves and kings", and "wait for labor with ease" to defeat Pang Juan three times. Pang Juan sent Gong Sunyue to infiltrate the state of Qi, and Gong Sunyue used Zou Ji's "making something out of nothing" to cause Tian Ji and Sun Bin to lose their military power; Then, 'borrowing a knife to kill', Tian Ji and Sun Bin almost died in the state of Chu. Pang Juan "took advantage of the situation to rob" and forced Sun Bin to copy "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu; With the help of Zhong Lichun, Sun Bin returned to the state of Qi by hiding the truth and crossing the sea. Pang Juan and the King of Chu united to force the State of Qi to surrender Sun Bin, while Qin Xie "stole the beam and replaced the pillar" to assist Sun Bin and Zhong Lichun in escaping to Korea through the State of Chu. Pang Juan invited South Korea to form an alliance in Chengzhou, to launch a "false expedition against Guo" and seize the strategic stronghold of Chenggao in Beijing, taking advantage of South Korea's lack of preparation. Sun Bin launched a campaign to retake Chenggao by attacking the east and the west; Then use the "empty city strategy" to deceive and retreat the vanguard troops of the Wei state that reinforced Cheng Gao. Pang Juan besieged Chenggao and forced Sun Bin to submit. The Han army "blossomed on the tree" and made a show of strength, breaking Pang Juan's siege. Pang Juan intended to fight against the Korean army to determine the outcome, but Sun Bin "threw a brick to attract jade" and dealt a heavy blow to the Wei army. Pang Juan was forced to withdraw his troops and return home. Before his death, King Wei of Qi regretted mistreating Tian Ji and Sun Bin, and instructed the Crown Prince to definitely invite Sun Bin back. Gongsun Yue instigated the young master to compete for the throne and launched a rebellion. Pang Juan 'slacked off in troubled waters' and occupied several cities in the state of Qi. The Crown Prince succeeded to the throne for King Xuan. King Xuan of Qi invited Sun Bin to return to his home country, but King Han refused to let him go. Sun Bin secretly crossed over Chen Cang and helped King Han capture Shangdang. He then passed through Zhao and returned to Qi. Gongsun Yue used the "beauty scheme" to deceive King Xuan of Qi, but King Xuan ignored the court affairs, leaving the court officials at a loss for a moment. Zhong Li dressed up as a maid and entered the palace, using hidden language to persuade the King of Qi. The King of Qi wanted to marry Zhong Lichun as his queen, but Zhong Lichun had to temporarily abandon his long-standing relationship with Sun Bin in order to become the queen of Qi. The beautiful women in the palace were unwilling to accept their loss of favor and used various means to lure King Xuan. Zhong Lichun "pointed fingers at the mulberry tree and cursed at the locust tree", killed the beautiful women, and rectified the harem. Sun Bin used a "chain trick" to first eliminate Gong Sunyue, and then forced Zou Ji to resign as prime minister. Sun Bin launched a "distant and close attack" to contact the state of Qin and recapture the border city. Eliminate Gongzi Jiaoshi by using tactics such as "luring the tiger away from the mountain" and "playing hard to capture". Pang Juan 'resurrected the dead', allowing a person who appeared to be a suburban teacher to use the name of a suburban teacher to gather remnants of the party and make a comeback. Sun Bin resorted to "burning the bottom of the pot", "stealing sheep", "closing the door to catch thieves", captured fake suburban soldiers alive, and quelled the rebellion. Pang Juan led a large army to attack Korea in order to bring Sun Bin to Wei for a decisive battle. Sun Bin "watched the fire from afar" and sent a bird slider to send troops to rescue Han, informing the King of Han of the news. South Korea fought desperately against the enemy, and Wei and South Korea were temporarily at a stalemate. Sun Bin led the Qi army to approach the capital of Wei, Daliang. Pang Juan led his army back to China and met the Qi army. Sun Bin, who had penetrated deep into the heartland of the Wei state, gradually fed the military kitchen while retreating. Pang Juan thought that the Qi army was afraid of the Wei army, and the number of deserters increased. He led elite soldiers to chase after Sun Bin day and night, and was ambushed by Sun Bin on the Maling Road. With ten thousand arrows, Pang Juan had no way out and committed suicide. The last tactic used by Sun Bin was to "take action as a last resort". Sun Bin defeated Pang Juan and quietly left, leaving behind two military strategies: one was "The Art of War" by Sun Bin, and the other was "The Art of War" written by himself. The Art of War and the Thirty Six Stratagems "by Sun Tzu, one episode by one, depicts the intertwining of ancient Chinese military strategy and Eastern intellectual imagination culture, while vividly portraying a historical picture of the political, military, and emotional interactions of different social classes during the Warring States period in China two thousand years ago.
