Plot Summary

This film is adapted from a real case in Indianapolis, USA in 1965. Sylvia (played by Ellen Page), a girl, moved with her sister Jenny (played by Hayley McFarland) to stay with her single mother Gertrude Barnizevsky (played by Catherine Keener), who has seven children, due to the busy schedule of her parents who work at an amusement park. Gertrude's eldest daughter Paula (played by Ari Graynor) is unmarried and pregnant. Sylvia accidentally hears the news and accidentally tells her classmates, but the information is leaked. Paula vented her anger on Sylvia, causing her to be physically punished by Gertrude. Afterwards, Gertrude, who was addicted to alcohol, attributed all family problems to Sylvia's arrival, imprisoned her in the basement behind the backs of the townspeople, and encouraged his children to torture Sylvia. Not only that, other children in the town also participated in this brutal devastation, jointly committing one of the most serious crimes against individuals in American history. Katharine Kinner was nominated for Best Actress at the 2008 Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for this film.
