Description
Plot Summary
Young Valentine (played by James McAvoy) applies to become the secretary and assistant of the great writer Leo Tolstoy (played by Christopher Plummer), witnessing the profound emotions of love and hate intertwined between the literary figure and his wife Sophia (played by Helen Mirren) in their later years. Tolstoy was dissatisfied with Sofia's extravagant lifestyle habits, while Sofia could not tolerate Tolstoy's collaboration with the "radical" disciple Vladimir Chekov (played by Paul Giamatti). There were two constant struggles around Tolstoy, and Valentine was also involved, writing diaries for Sofia and Chekov respectively, recording Tolstoy's later life. At the same time, she also developed feelings for Tolstoy's admirer Martha (played by Kerry Condon). Exhausted Tolstoy finally chose to run away from home, dying at the last station, while the struggle between Sofia and Chekhov never ceased until the very last moment
