Plot Summary

The unprecedented Great East Japan Earthquake, along with the resulting tsunami and nuclear leakage, destroyed the lives of countless people, including 15-year-old high school student Yuichi Sumida (played by Shota Ranya). After the disaster, he lived with his mother (played by Shingen Watanabe), as well as victims of the disaster such as Hino (played by Tetsuya Watanabe) and Tamura (played by Mitsukoshi Mitsuru) in their own rental yard, occasionally enduring harassment from his father (played by Ken Mitsuishi) who gambled excessively and from the underworld of debt collectors, Kaneko (played by Dian Dian). Among her classmates, Keiko Chazawa (played by Tomomi Nikaido) is the only one who admires Sumida. She records every brilliant quote from Sumida and breaks into his life on her own. They are willing to be ordinary people without any achievements, but they cannot avoid the cruel life that mercilessly crushes them. On a bloody night, Sumida committed unforgivable crimes and embarked on a self destructive life... This film is adapted from the original novel of the same name by manga artist Minoru Furuya and won the Best Newcomer Award at the 68th Venice Film Festival in 2011 (Masata Ranya&Tomomi Nikaido).
