Plot Summary
Director Michael Haneke once again won the Palme d'Or with this film. The two veteran actors in this film are the Venice Best Actress and the Cannes Berlin Double Best Actor. Anne (played by Emmanuelle Riva) and Georges (played by Jean Louis Trintignant) are an elderly couple in their 80s, both retired and educated music teachers. Their daughter Eva (played by Isabelle Huppert) is also a musician and currently lives abroad. But one day, Anne suddenly suffered a stroke, followed by hemiplegia and bedridden. And it was from this day on that her love for Georges began to be tested to some extent I always want to write something for 'Love', but I can't write anything. It's been a long time since I first watched 'Love' at movie week, but I don't have the courage to watch it again. The reason is simple, it is too real, too heavy, like those things we have never dared to face, killing and sucking blood, unforgettable. Love "may be the simplest yet most profound movie I have seen this year. It is filled with the power of human nature from beginning to end. In just two hours, it calmly and restrained itself to tell a story, but it is enough to bring the audience's emotions to the peak and endure for a long time. Aging, death, illness, loneliness, the things we least want to experience in life, the hidden pains we know but keep silent, have been brought to the screen by Haneke, becoming even more cruel. No one can escape aging and death. We will all face it all. Isn't life more cruel than movies? Haneke's narrative skills are amazing, and there are very few soundtracks in the film, except for the naturally occurring piano pieces, which are enough to make the audience follow the story and generate emotions. The first half of the movie still has a bit of humor and sudden thrills, but the narrative in the later part gradually becomes cold and direct towards people's hearts. The imagery runs through the film: a leaking hallway, a forgotten faucet, flying pigeons, oil paintings on the walls, some peaceful, some restless, like death, uncontrollable and inevitable. The performance of the two elderly people reached its peak, not allowing the audience to deviate from the story at all. The performance was so realistic that it was suffocating. When it comes to the sociality of movies, there are countless themes that leave no one to rely on, but Haneke has no interest in exploring them because everything else is unrelated to the theme of "love". The only thing left in the enclosed space is the emotional struggle between a few people, and the direct conflict ultimately belongs to the name of "love". This minimalist narrative and level view make people feel real yet powerless, perhaps this is the so-called "humble" movie, sincere and candid. And how many movies have deviated from their themes and souls, still using irrelevant gimmicks or bizarre tricks to attract attention? The scene of death in the film has sparked criticism from many viewers, which reminds me of the issue of 'euthanasia'. The Netherlands, where the author is located, was one of the earliest countries to adopt euthanasia, which is actually a respect for the rights and wishes of the living. This scene in the movie has differences, but also similarities. Many viewers are unable to identify with the values presented in the film. In fact, when I watched 'Love', when George picked up his pillow, he was first surprised and puzzled, but then an endless sense of sadness rose in his heart. The details in the movie have reminded the audience countless times: Anne had made up her mind to leave, and when George returned home and saw Anne sitting by the window, Anne had the heart to jump off a building and die; When Anne flipped through the photo album, hadn't she already said that life has been too long for her? When she shouted 'pain' and 'mom' all night long, couldn't she bear it anymore? When George fed Anne soup, couldn't she also accept the last mercy? The slap hit Anne's face, but it also hit George's heart heavily. Continuing to struggle like this will only bring mutual harm. The nanny has completely destroyed Anne's remaining self-esteem with her hair comb and mirror. What can he bring to her? So I burst into tears and understood George's intention. Instead of letting my lover die in pain, it was better to let her live happily in his heart. How can we not understand the feelings of our loved ones after a lifetime of mutual support? Those viewers who only see 'murder' are probably inexperienced and unable to understand 'love'. At a time when the Oscars are becoming increasingly uncertain next year, I have instead turned my gaze more firmly to 'Love'. There is not much complicated reason, but rather its courage to return to the original and oldest story proposition: about love and its definition. After countless filmmakers have tried to interpret it, Haneke can still use this movie to question the conscience of the audience and explore the meaning of life: time can kill everything, but it cannot kill the eternal love between us.
