Plot Summary

The story takes place in 1940s Hong Kong, where a young girl named Fang Lan (played by Zhou Xun) and her mother (played by Ye Dexian) live a life of mutual dependence. They rent the second floor of their home to writer Mao Dun (played by Guo Tao) and his wife Kong Delong (played by Jiang Wenli). Fang Lan has a great love for contradictory writing and feels the passionate revolutionary spirit and surging national integrity in it. However, she knows very little about the turbulent situation and tense political atmosphere around her. Liu Jinjin (played by Peng Yuyan) is a progressive youth with agile skills. Commissioned by the organization, he is responsible for escorting a group of important literati stranded in Hong Kong back to the mainland, including Mao Dun and his family. Through accidental collisions, Fang Lan was caught up in this dangerous operation and, with the advice and encouragement of Liu Jinjin, joined the revolutionary team. As a result, the mother and daughter were swept into the rolling tide of history.
