Description

Plot Summary

In the 1870s, a small isolated village in northern Denmark. A pair of sisters who believe in Lutheranism, Martina (Birgitte Federspiel) and Filipa (Bodil Gil Bodil Kjer), usually live in seclusion. Under the guidance of their pastor father, they are willing to sacrifice love and devote themselves to religious cause. The kind-hearted sisters take in Babette (played by Stephanie Audran, St é phane), a woman who comes from Paris to avoid chaos. Babette, with a mysterious background, was originally a famous chef in a French restaurant. Babette was lucky to win a huge French lottery of 10000 francs. In order to repay the kind sisters, Babette decided to cook in person on the death day of the father of the two sisters and present the villagers with an authentic and rich French dinner. This film is adapted from the novel by Danish female author Isaac Dinason. It won the Best Foreign Language Film award at the 60th Academy Awards in 1988, the Catholic Humanitarian Award at the 40th Cannes Film Festival in 1987, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 46th Golden Globe Awards in 1989.
