Plot Summary

People who are anxious and uneasy due to various troubles are like houses on fire, and they are called 'people of the fire house'. After his ex-wife passed away, writer Gui Yixiong (played by Ogata Fist) married Shunzi (played by いしだあゆみ), and their lives with their five children were smooth sailing. Unfortunately, a disaster struck, and the second son Jiro (played by Nobuyuki Ichiuchi) contracted encephalitis and was unable to take care of himself. Shoko, who was deeply affected, became superstitious about religion and his family relationships became increasingly tense. During this period, Kazuo met young actress Keiko Yajima (played by Misako Harada), also from Kyushu, and invited her to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony of the Dazai Zhi Literary Monument with him. After returning home, Kazuo confessed his incestuous love and Shunzi ran away from home in anger. Kazuo simply moved to a hotel and immersed himself in endless joy with Keiko... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Kazuo Tanba and won seven awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress at the Japan Film Academy Awards.
