Description

Plot Summary

This film is adapted from real battles during the Vietnam War. In November 1965, the Vietnam War escalated to a phase where the US military directly participated in the war. The number of US troops stationed in Vietnam continues to rise. Colonel Moore (played by Mel Gibson) is tasked with training a group of new recruits into true soldiers, while many accompanying family members flood into the unit. The soldiers play the dual roles of husbands and soldiers, and the warm atmosphere is mixed with a hint of unease. In order to alleviate the monotony of military life, the army held a large evening party. The time for the expedition has arrived, and Moore solemnly promised at the ceremony to 'bring back every soldier'. Moore and his troops were parachuted into the river valley near Cambodia, where the North Vietnamese army's heavy forces were located. The outnumbered American army was surrounded heavily, resulting in heavy casualties. Finally, with the assistance of artillery and helicopters, the situation became deadlocked. The next day, the battle advanced to the hills but still couldn't break through the encirclement. Moore sought help from the air force, but due to the close distance between the two sides, some ground troops were injured by American gasoline bombs. Photographer Joe (played by Barry Pepper) captured the brutal scenes of the battle. On the third day, the US military was preparing for a decisive close combat when air support was in place and the Vietnamese army was completely annihilated.
