Plot Summary

Fengjie County, where the construction of the Three Gorges is underway, welcomes two Shanxi natives, a man and a woman. Han Sanming (played by Han Sanming), a man from Fenyang, is a loyal and honest coal miner who came to Fengjie to search for his ex-wife whom he hadn't seen in sixteen years. His ex-wife was bought by him with money back then, and after giving birth, he ran back to Fengjie. During the process of searching for his ex-wife, there were many twists and turns. Han Sanming decided to stay and work as a laborer until his ex-wife appeared. A woman named Shen Hong (played by Zhao Tao) comes from Taiyuan and is a quiet nurse who comes to offer sacrifices in search of her husband whom she has not contacted for many days. The relationship between her husband and her husband has long been nominal, and although she is well aware of this, she still wants her husband to give her an explanation in person. Shen Hong's search process was not smooth sailing either, as her husband intentionally or unintentionally avoided her. Although Han Sanming and Shen Hong do not know each other, they have a mysterious connection in the dark because they have to make a relative choice between "picking up" and "abandoning". This film won the Golden Lion Award at the 63rd Venice International Film Festival in 2006.
