Description

Plot Summary

This film does not focus on appreciating the natural scenery of various national parks, but rather on the history of national parks, from the beginning of the 19th century to the 1970s. Burns integrated the history of national parks into the entire history of the United States, from the Western expansion to the advent of the automobile age, from the Great Depression to the post World War II tourism boom. Yosemite, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon are the oldest and most popular among all national parks, making them the core of Burns' storytelling of history. There are 55 other national parks in the United States, some of which occupy important positions in this film, such as Colorado Mesa Verde National Park, Florida Everglades, Great Smoky Mountains (North Carolina and Tennessee), Acadia National Park in Maine and Mount McKinley in Alaska. Burns did not want to advertise for specific national parks. He attempted to praise the grandeur and beauty of nature, reminding people to be wary of excessive commercialization, logging, mining, and large-scale grazing.
