Plot Summary
As long as there is a war, soldiers need to go to the battlefield, and once the war is over, what will happen to those who are not soldiers? Danfung Dennis tells us through his documentary that even when soldiers go off the battlefield, they do not stop fighting, and the enemies they face are often themselves. Behind the scenes story: This film is director Danfung's first documentary and won the Jury Prize in the World Film Documentary Unit at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The movie, with its highly impactful visuals, allows the audience to experience war conflicts and post-war life up close, truly showcasing the true cost that humanity has paid for war. Danfung Dennis was a former photojournalist who has been providing photographic photographs of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts for newspapers and magazines for many years. Although the images have a wide range of dissemination, he believes that they are not enough to convey the cruelty of war. The public has long been accustomed to these war scenes and they have become numb. In the summer of 2009, he decided to return to Afghanistan with his equipment, hoping to use what he saw with his own eyes to faithfully restore the true nature of the war. He didn't plan to make a documentary at the time, so he didn't have a script, filming plan, or funding. He only had a bulletproof vest, a backpack, and a customized Canon 5D. Danfung was arranged to follow the US Marine Corps Eighth Division in different provinces until he learned that an important attack on Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan would be launched in the Helmand River valley, and then he decided to film it. On the battlefield, he met Sergeant Nathan Harris, who was 25 years old. They fought together on the front line for several hours and were met with a full-scale counterattack from the enemy. Without rescue or being surrounded, this group of troops fought against the elusive enemy. Nathan Harris was almost killed in an ambush, but after recovering from his injuries, Nathan returned to his home in North Carolina. With the selfless love and encouragement of his wife Ashley, Nathan worked hard to overcome various difficulties in transitioning from a soldier to a civilian life. From here on, the perspective of the film shifts from war documentary news reporting to the post-war life of an ordinary soldier. The physical pain gradually made Nathan dependent on medication. As he tried to bridge the gap between his war experience and daily life, he became increasingly painful.
