Description
Plot Summary
The story takes place in 1921, when Ava (played by Marion Cotillard) and her sister Magda (played by Angela Sarafyan) cannot resist the neon lights of the bustling city and set off from Poland to New York to search for gold. On the way, Magda was unlucky to suffer from the incurable tuberculosis at that time, so she was isolated by doctors in the hospital on Ellis Island, and the two brothers and sisters parted ways. After arriving in New York, Ava realized that everything here was far less beautiful than she had imagined. Unfortunately, she fell into the hands of the pimp Bruno (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and became a prostitute. Ava's life was filled with pain and humiliation, and being able to meet her sister again became her only belief in her heart. By chance, Ava met a magician named Orlando (played by Jeremy Renner), and the kind Orlando made Ava understand that he may be the only stepping stone towards her new life.
