Plot Summary

Christopher (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a noble gentleman who believes in the traditional morality of the knightly era, is upright, patient, and self disciplined. And Sylvia (played by Rebecca Hall) is a typical socialite, living a life of debauchery with numerous lovers. However, the unexpected pregnancy forced her to marry the conservative Christopher in order to save her reputation. The dull life after marriage and her husband's indifference drove Sylvia crazy, and she began to use all means to stimulate Christopher. Sylvia eloping with her ex lover became the beginning of their conflict, but their religious beliefs did not allow them to divorce. Thus, this barely maintained marriage plunged the two into endless torment. By an unexpected opportunity, Christopher met the radical and knowledgeable modern woman Valentine (played by Adelaide Clemens), and further contact led to the love between these two seemingly different worlds. However, secular constraints hindered the further development of their relationship. At the same time, Sylvia also realized the crisis of her marriage and began to restrain her life efforts to save it, showing goodwill to her husband. The arrival of World War I, Christopher joining the army, put this love triangle relationship to the test and decision. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Ford Maddox Ford.
