Plot Summary

This film is adapted from Henry James' novel 'The Screw is Tighten'. At the end of the 19th century, the beautiful female teacher Miss Giddens (played by Deborah Kerr) came to a rural estate to take care of her employer's niece Flora (played by Pamela Franklin) and nephew Miles (played by Martin Stephens). Soon, Miss Giddens discovered that she often saw strange images, as if the house was haunted by ghosts, and the children were possessed by demons, speaking or making overly mature and eerie words or actions. Housekeeper Mrs. Gross (played by Megs Jenkins) reveals to her that all of this may be related to the underground romance of the late former governess and manager. Miss Giddens was desperate to rescue the children from the devil's grasp, but could the ghostly figure she saw be just her own illusion? This film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in France and was nominated for both Best British Film and Best Film by the British Film and Television Association.
