Plot Summary

At the end of World War II, the Japanese army was on the brink of collapse, and the military resorted to suicide attacks as a "trick" to reverse their defeat. Kagoshima's Zhilan was the frontline where the special agent team was stationed back then. Countless young people in their prime have flown fighter jets and sacrificed their precious lives, leaving behind endless sorrow for the living. Former Second Lieutenant of the Secret Service, Hideharu Yamaoka (played by Ken Takakura), survived the war and stayed with his wife, Tomoko (played by Yuko Tanaka), in Chikan to make a living by fishing and farming, living a simple and happy life. Emperor Hirohito's death marked the end of the Showa era, and the secret agents who had been gradually forgotten and were sleeping in history were once again brought up for the world. Yamaoka's former comrade in arms, Fujieda (played by Takauji Mizuhashi), revisited Zhilan and pursued his unfulfilled wish; The hostess of the wealthy restaurant, Mrs. Tomoko Yamamoto (played by Tomoko Nara), sees off batches of passionate men, and now her heart is filled with mixed emotions; Korean born Jinshan Wenlong (played by Seiyue Ozawa) was buried at sea, and decades later, his token was brought back to his hometown Busan by Yamaoka. War makes living beings small and fragile, but even so, they emit a faint yet unforgettable light like fireflies... adapted from the novel of the same name by Yang Takeyama.
