Description

Plot Summary

This is a film about youth, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption, from Noah Baumbach's contemporary version of Manhattan. This director has directed "Squid and Whale," "Margot at the Wedding," and "Greenberg," and is known for his expertise in depicting the lifestyle and mental struggles of middle-class intellectuals. Actress Greta Geweg can be called his "muse", always playing clumsy and lovely women who make people let go of their guard. The female protagonist of this film, Frances, is a dancer who earns a living by teaching dance classes to others. Like people around her age, Frances worked hard towards her dreams but achieved nothing. So far, her greatest achievement in life has been making a close friend, Sophie - a serious and sharp tongued girl who developed a strong chemistry with Frances' playful personality, and they hit it off very well. They are like a pair of Dorothy Parker (1893-1967, American poet whose works often sharply and bluntly satirize the weaknesses of contemporary American character) commenting on their own lives, such as "this apartment is very self aware" (when Sophie arrived at Frances' new home). But occasionally they also admit that they look like a lesbian couple who no longer engage in sexual activity. In this state of life, Frances slowly opened her heart to a man, but there were still some basic principle issues that needed to be resolved between them. In the end, what Frances would most like to do is still dance.
