Description

Plot Summary

In 1945, Germany was defeated and the Polish society, which expelled foreign aggression, did not experience true peace. Hatred between different factions and bureaucrats occasionally occurs... Machick (played by Zbigniew Cybulski) and his superior Anjie, under the orders of their former boss and mayor Svetsky, assassinate the newly appointed regional secretary of the Workers' Party, Szchuka. However, Machick accidentally kills two innocent workers in a moment of carelessness. Svetsky was about to be promoted to minister and held a grand banquet. Machek was immersed in deep guilt for harming innocent people and could only use his brief relationship with the bar girl Christina to relieve his distress. Angey demanded that Machek pick himself up and fulfill his duty as a soldier. Sizhuka detests the extravagance and indulgence of local officials, yet he cannot even retrieve his lost son. In the vast darkness of the night, Machek found Sizhuka, and both of them had to face their fate in the post-war ruins. This film won the international award at the 1959 Venice Film Festival
