Plot Summary

Before the liberation of old Shanghai, big capitalists, warlords, speculators, foreigners, gangsters, and swindlers were rampant. They lived a corrupt life of luxury and extravagance, while the lower class people were poor and struggling to make ends meet. The funny looking boy with a big head, round nose, three strands of hair, and a slender figure is the protagonist Sanmao (played by Wang Longji) in this film. Sanmao lost his parents at a young age and wandered aimlessly on the streets of Shanghai, penniless. He was extremely hungry and even ate advertising paste. When he was tired, he slept in a garbage truck. In order to survive, he delivered newspapers, pushed rickshaws, and picked up cigarette butts, but bad luck always followed behind, and everything ended in failure. He did good deeds with good intentions, but was falsely accused and beaten instead. However, Sanmao, who lives in the dark bottom, always maintains an honest and kind personality.
