Description

Plot Summary

McMurdo (played by Jack Nicholson) pretends to be mentally ill in order to escape forced labor in prison and is sent to a mental hospital. His arrival brings a severe impact to the lifeless mental hospital. Mike demanded to watch a baseball game on television, challenging the strict management system of the hospital and facing various obstacles from the head nurse Rachel (played by Louise Fletcher); Mike led the patients out to sea to fish, uplifting their spirits, but causing great pain to the hospital. In order to punish Mike for his recklessness and repeated violations of the rules, the hospital has decided to keep him in the insane asylum forever. Mike, who was naturally free, could no longer tolerate the life in the madhouse. He joined forces with his fellow patients, the tall Native American "chief," to embark on his own plan: to fly over the madhouse. This film won five awards at the 48th Academy Awards in 1975, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Actress, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The spirit of the protagonist's "Better to die than to be free" still has great practical significance in today's society.
