Plot Summary

At the end of the European War, optimism gradually permeated the Allied forces. In order to end the war ahead of schedule, Allied generals from various regions believed that a fierce attack could lead to a direct assault on Berlin and end the war. So they rashly airdropped a large number of paratroopers behind the German camp to capture the bridge spanning the Rhine River in Arnhem. Unexpectedly, they encountered stubborn resistance from the German army, and the Allies paid a heavy price of casualties. This can be considered the most dramatic battle of World War II, which ultimately ended in a painful defeat for the Allies. The war epic "The Distant Bridge," directed by Oscar winning director Richard Attenborough, is adapted from the novel of the same name by Cornelius Ryan. The film portrays and praises the fighting spirit of the Allied forces in World War II, and is hailed as a super war epic in film history.
