Description

Plot Summary

The film is adapted from the bestselling autobiography of war correspondent Bruckheim. The film received six nominations for the 54th Academy Awards in 1982. Wolfgang Petersen became the first person to receive a nomination for Best Director for a German language film. The film was originally a six hour television series and is now circulating in three different length versions: a 136 minute theatrical version, a 216 minute director's edited version, and a 293 minute unedited version. During World War II, Germany invented a U-boat that disappeared without a trace and proved to be successful in naval battles. Once, this submarine was ordered to launch an attack on the British fleet, but on their way back after completing the mission, they encountered an unprecedented crisis. The potential multiple crises constantly threaten the safety of the officers and soldiers on board the ship. This seemingly powerful and cold behemoth is completely unable to protect itself, and everything can only be left to fate .....
