Description

Plot Summary

Harvey Milk, a gay politician named one of the representative figures of the 20th century by Time magazine in the United States. In 1970, young and successful businessman Milk (played by Sean Penn) encountered a young and handsome man named Scott Smith (played by James Franco) by chance. The two quickly fell in love, and Milk began to realize his true sexual orientation. Soon they moved to Castro Street in San Francisco and worked together to run a photography equipment store. As their relationship became public, the small shop gradually became a gathering place for LGBTQ+individuals, eventually expanding to the entire neighborhood. However, comrades were still not accepted by the public at that time, and they continued to receive various unfair treatments. Milk was inspired by this and decided to enter politics, run for city monitor, and use his own efforts to push the government to improve the situation of his comrades. After repeated defeats, Milk finally succeeded, but was also criticized and attacked by the conservative forces... This film won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Actor (Sean Penn) and Best Screenplay, 2009 Independent Spirit Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (James Franco).
