Plot Summary

Engineer Tom (Jim Broadbent) and psychological counselor Gerri (Ruth Sheen) are a middle-aged couple living in London. Mary (Lesley Manville), a single woman, is Gerri's colleague. In spring, Gerri invited Mary to his house for dinner. Mary told them that she was saving money to buy a car. That night, Mary got drunk and spent the night at Gerri's house. In the morning, she met Tom and Gerri's son Joe (played by Oliver Maltman). In the summer, Mary finally bought a used car and went to Gerri's house to attend a friend gathering. She also met Tom's old friend Ken (played by Peter Wight), but Mary, who was also lonely, only felt panic about Ken's love. In autumn, Joe brought his girlfriend Katie (played by Karina Fernandez) home, and coincidentally, Mary also came. Seeing Joe and his girlfriend, she felt very uncomfortable. In winter, Tom's brother Ronnie's (played by David Bradley) wife passed away, and after attending the funeral, Tom invited him to stay in London for a few days.
