Description

Plot Summary

In June 1944, as the Second World War was coming to an end, Saipan Island in the South Seas experienced its most brutal moment. The 70000 strong American army landed on the island and overwhelmingly destroyed the Japanese defense. The defeat was settled, and Japanese officers ordered the entire island's military and civilians to pledge allegiance to the emperor with "jade shards". The beautiful island of Saipan instantly became a bloody hell on earth. Lieutenant Oda Ryo (played by Takeno Uchiro) of the Army Infantry 18th Company led 2000 soldiers to launch a suicide attack on the US military. After a hand to hand combat, both sides suffered losses. Oda narrowly escaped and encountered remnants of comrades from other units such as Imamatsu Horiuchi (played by Shoumei Tangsawa) and Toshio Kinotani (played by Takayuki Yamada). At this moment, the belief in "survival" occupied the hearts of Oda, and he decided to protect the surviving military and civilians until the end of the war... This film is adapted from Don Jones' long recorded novel "Oba, the Last Samurai: Saipan 1944-45", based on the true historical facts of Saipan during World War II.
