Plot Summary

During World War I, the German government called on young and enthusiastic student volunteers to join the battlefield and defend their country with beautiful slogans. Paul Baumann (played by Lew Ayres), a passionate German youth, devoted himself to World War I with heroic ideals. However, when Paul and his classmates were trained and sent to fight on the Western Front, they witnessed brutal hunger, bloodshed, and death. The absurdity and ruthlessness of war made Paul go from being obsessed with war to feeling disheartened and returning home due to injury. But the ignorant villagers were completely unaware of the danger on the front line. Paul angrily explained to the students the ruthlessness of war, and there was no fighting on the western front. He ended his vacation early and returned to the front line. While reaching out to catch a butterfly in the trench, he was unfortunately hit by a stray bullet. The classic anti war film "No War on the Western Front" directed by the famous Hollywood director Lewis Milestone is adapted from the novel of the same name by German author Remag. This film, which can be regarded as one of the greatest anti war films in film history, was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the 3rd Academy Awards in 1930. The director used concise and refined shots to recreate the horrific reality of the war, and also vividly portrayed Paul's disillusionment with his patriotic dreams with delicate and smooth techniques. The scene of Paul catching a butterfly and being hit by a bullet at the end of the film has become a classic moment in film history.
