Description

Plot Summary

Russian poet Andrei (played by Oleg Yankovsky), accompanied by the beautiful female translator Eugenia (played by Domiziana Giordano), travels to Italy to explore the life of an 18th century Russian composer. They visited a rural church full of religious imagery together and stopped in an ancient town with natural hot springs. At this moment, he met Dominic (played by Erland Josephson), a madman who was not understood by the world. The villagers thought he was mentally ill because he had imprisoned his family in earlier years. Andre saw the deep meaning behind Dominic's madness and was attracted to him. At the same time, he rejected the seductive expression of love from Youjinya. At this moment, Andre wandered between fragmented reality and surreal dreams, unable to extricate himself. His longing for his motherland, separation from his family... various emotions mixed together, entangled with each other, and turned into lifelong homesickness. This film won the Best Director Award at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival, the Jury Prize, and the International Jury Prize
