Plot Summary
The 1975 film 'The Great Lord' depicts the largest Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II on D-Day 1944.6.6. Directed by Stuart Cooper and awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, this film is a reference for many subsequent World War II masterpieces. Movie Background: On the morning of June 6, 1944, Allied forces, mainly consisting of American and British troops, landed on the beaches of Normandy in southern France. The so-called second battlefield has been opened up, and the plan is called Operation OVERLOAD. Some people turn it into the emperor or the overlord or hegemon (in Chinese Mainland). Actually, Overlord refers to a British monarch. Due to the secrecy measures implemented during the Normandy landings, many people were unaware of the actual time of the attack, and the highest authorities referred to it as a code name, with Dday representing the day of the attack and H hour representing the time of the attack. All subsequent Allied attacks were carried out in this pattern. The Allies also took large-scale deception measures, a deception operation codenamed "Perseverance", misleading the German army into thinking that the Allies would land in Calais, the narrowest point of the strait. At the same time, large-scale air raids were carried out to weaken the German forces near Normandy. Allied Commander Eisenhower was originally scheduled to carry out the landing on June 5th, but due to poor weather conditions, it was postponed to June 6th. In fact, the weather during the Allied landing was quite harsh, and many soldiers and officers were unable to tolerate the turbulence of the ships, experiencing seasickness, vomiting, and a great physiological burden. But with a belief, most taxi officers and soldiers silently endured without much rebound. On the contrary, they all hope to get rid of the waiting pains in the assembly area as soon as possible and fight against the German army as soon as possible. At that time, for most people, there was only one thing worth caring about, which was when to launch an attack? During the long wait, in order to relieve boredom and distress, non commissioned officers took pleasure in gambling. At that time, the stationed troops of the US military were the most popular and almost everywhere was gambling. If they were in Taiwan, they might have been sent to solitary confinement long ago. In the plan, the Normandy beachhead will be divided into five major parts, from west to east: UTAH, OMAHA, GOLDEN, JUNO, Sword, and SWORD beachhead. The Utah beachhead was landed by the US 4th Division, the Omaha beachhead was landed by the US 29th and 1st Divisions, the Golden beachhead was landed by the British 50th Division, the Tin Hau beachhead was landed by the Canadian 3rd Division, and the Sword beachhead was landed by the British 3rd Division. It is planned to use 176475 troops and 20110 vehicles to complete the landing within the first two days (D+2 days) of landing. To provide support for them, a total of tens of thousands of military aircraft and over 5000 warships and landing craft were deployed. After landing, all the beachheads were able to land smoothly with only slight resistance, except for the Omaha beachhead. Due to poor air and shore bombardment effects, as well as the Allies' neglect of the German 352nd Infantry Division's increased defense, the beachhead suffered heavy casualties, with a total of 2500 casualties, accounting for over a quarter of the total Allied casualties on the day of landing. In the Battle Plan of the Great Monarch, a special plan was made to deploy three airborne units to the enemy's rear in advance, controlling various key routes and delaying the arrival of German reinforcements to facilitate the Allied ground forces' attack. In order to achieve the function of surprise attack, airborne assault was decided to be carried out at night, on the one hand to cover the airborne operation with darkness, and on the other hand to achieve the effect of surprise attack. Preliminary estimates from the highest command center indicate that the airborne assault has a very high loss rate, possibly up to 50%, and some units may even suffer losses of over 70%. For Eisenhower, approving the airborne operation was a difficult task, knowing the high losses but having to do so. Taking into account all factors, this arduous task is still being undertaken by over 18000 personnel from the US 101 and 822 airborne units and the British 6th Airborne Division. Eisenhower spent over an hour talking to the paratroopers before the operation. After the paratroopers departed, General Eisenhower gazed into the night sky. NBC reporter Red Mueller was surprised to find tears welling up in the general's eyes. After the Allied landing, various logistical facilities were also prepared to ensure the integrity of the beachhead position and to continuously deliver supplies. The most unique among them is the design of the artificial port, which is also the first new design adopted. The name of the artificial harbor is Mulberry, which is the same size as a Dover harbor. Two were built in total, with many three story high cement boxes (code named Phoenix) and floating channels (code named Whale) placed between the breakwater and the beach. Anti air balloons were also raised on the beach to prevent German fighter jets from invading. In addition, there is also an undersea oil pipeline directly connected from the UK mainland to the beachhead. Every day, millions of tons of supplies are delivered to the beachhead, providing complete support to the Allies. However, due to the continuous adverse weather conditions and the eventual invasion of storms, the artificial port was later destroyed by the severe storm. Nevertheless, its appearance remained the only barrier and support for the Allies to consolidate their beachhead positions during the initial landing phase.
