Description
Plot Summary
In 1939, the Nazis placed hundreds of Jewish fugitives from all walks of life in a luxurious passenger ship and took them to Havana, Cuba for refuge. However, when the ship arrived at Havana port, the Cuban government refused entry to Jewish passengers on board based on its strict immigration policies. In fact, the Nazis had long anticipated such a result, which was exactly what they hoped to see. When the exiles left Havana in anger, the German government could use this to prove that Jews were the least popular race in the world, thus finding a reasonable excuse for Hitler's policy of ethnic cleansing. Some people think that the implied meaning of this movie is chilling, but the ending of "The Last Day of the Dead" still gives a glimmer of hope: the subtitles tell us that most of the passengers on the ship eventually escaped the disaster and survived.
