Plot Summary

After the world nuclear war, the government injected everyone with a drug that numbed their emotional nerves, causing them to close their emotions and become walking corpses. John Preston (played by Christian Bale) is a senior military official in the government. He destroyed all art and crafts, and killed anyone who resisted and did not abandon his emotions. His colleague Elo Patjay (played by Sean Bean) was also not spared for possessing a banned book. During an operation, John met Mary O'Brien (played by Emily Watson). She made John start cutting off drugs, trying to experience what it's like to live an emotional life. He was intoxicated by the wonderful and moving scenes that first appeared in his life, and deeply felt guilty and remorseful for the daily acts of destroying art. His abnormal behavior was noticed by his new colleague Brent (played by Taye Diggs) who had been spying on his location, so he tried his best to test John's authenticity. What choices would John make between work and morality, danger and comfort, emotions and loss?
