Plot Summary

In the 1940s, the shadow of war enveloped the world. In a mountain village in Japan, a middle-aged man named Hisashi Kurokawa (played by Nobumasa Nishi) enlisted in the military, but upon his return, he became a useless man with limbs amputated, half of his face burned, and a deaf and mute mouth. His wife Maozi (played by Shinobu Terashima) cannot accept this fact and is on the verge of suicide. However, Jiuzang was widely praised by villagers and even the government as a "living military god". Under the persuasion of villagers and relatives, Maozi accepted her almost unrecognizable husband. The incomplete Hisashi cannot perceive the changes in the domestic and international situation, and his most basic desire has become his urgent need. Even though Maozi was reluctant, she still had to fulfill the responsibility that a wife could fulfill. During this process, the fragile vanity of "God of War" and "God of War's wife" gradually shattered, and she and Hisashi each faced unavoidable pain deep in their souls... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Edogawa Ranpo and won the Best Actress Award at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival (Shinobu Terashima).
