Plot Summary

In 1941, US Naval Intelligence Agency agent Soames (played by John Cusack) was ordered to Shanghai to investigate the truth behind the assassination of his friend Connor. He wandered around social celebrity parties as a reporter for the German Herald in Shanghai. He used his romantic relationship with Nazi engineer Mrs. Mueller to dispel suspicion and obtain intelligence. In a gambling game, he met Anna (played by Gong Li), the wife of the gang leader Lanting, and the mysterious code words between her and her subordinates made him curious. Unable to track down, he had to continue investigating. In order to investigate the cause of Connor's death, he secretly met with Connor's informant. However, the meeting between the two went bankrupt due to the Japanese military's pursuit of the underground party. By chance, Somme reunited with Anna once again and, through her introduction, met Anthony Lanting (played by Chow Yun fat), the leader of the Shanghai underworld, and Colonel Tanaka (played by Ken Watanabe), the head of the Japanese intelligence agency. During the investigation, Somme gradually discovered that Connor's death was related to a mysterious Japanese woman (played by Rinko Kikuchi)
