Description
Plot Summary
The group of islands off the northwest coast of Scotland is designated as the Western Islands Parliamentary District. The Ross and Cromarty Historic District, located in the northern part of Lewis and Harris Island, is part of Ross Historic County, while the rest of the archipelago belongs to Inverness shire Historic County. As its name suggests, the Outer Hebrides are further away from Scotland than the Inner Hebrides. The archipelago extends 210 kilometers (130 miles) from Lewis Island in the north to Barra Head Island in the south, facing the Inner Hebrides across the North Minch Channel to the north and separated from the Hebrides by the Little Minch Channel to the south. The Outer Hebrides are distributed in a crescent shape, about 65 kilometers (40 miles) from the Scottish mainland. The larger islands include Lewis Harris, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, and Bala. About 65 kilometers northwest of the main island formation is the St. Kilda Island Group. Many islands in the Outer Hebrides are uninhabited, and the population is almost concentrated on the island of Lewis Harris. Due to a lack of economic opportunities, the population on the island decreased significantly in the mid-20th century. The archipelago is one of the few regions where Scottish Gaelic is still spoken as a daily language. Humans have lived in the Outer Hebrides for at least 4000 years and there are countless prehistoric relics, including the megalithic ring of Callanish (Lewis Island). It is formed by giant stones arranged in a Celtic Cross, measuring 123 meters (405 feet) from north to south and 43 meters (140 feet) from east to west, and is equally important as the circular Stonehenge in Salisbury, England. There are also several smaller stone rings arranged along the Karanisi Giant Stone Ring. The novel "Green Light" by French science fiction writer Jules D describes this In the first few hundred years after AD, the residents here were mostly Gaelic speaking Christians who came with St. Columba in the 6th century. In the 8th century, the archipelago was invaded by Vikings, and from the 9th to the 12th century, it was ruled by Norwegians. Later, Somerled rebelled against Norwegian rule and established a territory for the archipelago. Until the late Middle Ages, the lords were still able to effectively rule over the archipelago. It was not until after 1493 that the Kingdom of Scotland gained control, and the history of the archipelago was combined with the history of Scotland's historic counties.
