Plot Summary

Michael Dorsey (played by Dustin Hoffman) is a relatively unknown actor who has been involved in some small plays and soap operas. Recently, he had a falling out with his agent George Fields (played by Sydney Pollack) because his agent was unwilling to help him find investment for his next play and believed that he would never be able to find a job again. In order to raise money to play the script written by his roommate Jeff (played by Bill Murray), Michael disguised himself as a woman and changed his name to Dorothy Michaels. He heard about an audition for a TV series from his female friend Sandy (played by Teri Garr), and he successfully became a character named Kimberly in the show. He had a great conversation with the female lead Julie Nichols (played by Jessica Lange) and even made Julie's father fall in love with him. However, Julie did not know Dorothy's true gender. Michael gradually realizes that Julie's boyfriend, TV director Ron, does not truly love her, and he himself is also increasingly fond of Julie. The character created by Michael caused a sensation, and what troubled him even more was that more and more men were courting him ....
