Plot Summary

After the grand royal wedding in Vienna, Sisi (Romy Schneider) began her life as queen. She slowly adjusted herself to adapt to the life of the Austrian court, but found it very difficult to get along with Empress Sophie (played by Magda Schneider). The tyrannical Empress Dowager adhered to the traditional customs of the royal family and constantly instilled in Franz (played by Karlheinz Bhm) how to abide by royal laws to manage the empire and family. After the birth of Sisi's daughter, the conflict between her and Sophie further intensified. Sophie, according to the rules of the royal family, did not allow Sisi to raise her daughter by herself, while Franz obediently obeyed his mother's wishes, making Sisi and her daughter unable to be together. Sad and disappointed, Sisi returned to Bavaria alone. Feeling guilty, Franz immediately followed and persuaded Sisi to return to Austria with him. At this point, Sophie had to change her mind and agree to allow Sisi to raise her daughter. Afterwards, Sisi accompanied Franz on his visits to many countries and received a warm welcome in Hungary. They were crowned as the king and queen of the Austro Hungarian Empire to the cheers of the Hungarian people. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
