Plot Summary

Two father son pairs, estrangement and estrangement, communication and understanding, are all playing out in their lives. My son Kenichi (played by Keiichi Nakai) is critically ill, but he refuses to communicate with his father in the end due to his poor relationship with him. Father Takada (played by Ken Takakura) travels from Japan to Yunnan to film the Nuo opera "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles" sung by Li Jiamin in order to fulfill his son's wishes. After traveling thousands of miles, Gao Tian finally arrived in Yunnan and struggled to communicate with the local residents. He learned that Li Jiamin had committed a crime and was imprisoned. It turned out that Li Jiamin also had a heart wrenching past with his son and was therefore convicted. Takada went to great lengths to find Li Jiamin in prison and asked him to sing a play. Unexpectedly, after listening to the story of Takata and his son, Li Jiamin also thought of his abandoned illegitimate child. Halfway through the performance, he burst into tears. Takada decided to go back and find his son to investigate the prison. On the way, the two of them talked and took care of each other, and their feelings were very close. However, the emotional ice between his son and Li Jiamin could not be broken no matter how hard they tried. Just as Li Jiamin was singing again, Takada received a call saying that his son had already died with a smile on his face and forgave himself.
