Description
Plot Summary
The film is adapted from Karen Dionne's bestselling novel of the same name, telling the story of the female protagonist Helena (played by Daisy Ridley) who appears to have an ideal life with her excellent husband and young daughter, but conceals a shocking past: her mother was kidnapped in her teens, and she is the child of a captive and abuser. Her father Jacob Holbrooke (played by Ben Mendelsohn) is known as the "King of the Swamp" and imprisoned the mother and daughter in the wilderness for many years. They lived a 12 year life controlled by a violent man until he was arrested and sent to prison. Afterwards, Jacob escaped from prison, causing the deaths of two prison guards. Helena realized the potential threat her father posed to her family and was forced to confront her secret past, determined to bring him down.
