Description

Plot Summary

This drama starts with the development of the atomic bomb and the rapid spread of nuclear weapons decades later, tracing the history of the Cold War, from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the rise of Vladimir Putin, and then to the Russo Ukrainian War. Turning Point: The Atomic Bomb and the Cold War "conducted over 100 interviews in 7 countries around the world, revealing deep personal stories and demonstrating how the Cold War changed people's lives and propelled world history. From survivors of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to extensive filming in Ukraine, Germany, and some former Soviet republics, the series includes interviews with seven current or former world leaders, including Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, as well as famous political figures such as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, former CIA Director Robert Gates, and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The series also introduces key figures from the Cold War era, including Julius Rosenberg, a famous German protest leader who helped topple the Berlin Wall, and the son of Ethel Rosenberg. It also involves one of the last lengthy interviews with nuclear activist Daniel Asperger, who called America's classified nuclear program "institutional madness". This nine episode documentary explores the decades long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, set against the backdrop of current events, clearly demonstrating that the impact of the Cold War continues to this day.
