Description

Plot Summary

In 814 AD, during the medieval period in Europe, an ordinary family lived in Germany. Due to the discrimination and various restrictions faced by women at that time, Johanna (played by Johanna Wokalek) grew up under the patriarchal beliefs of her missionary father. Although her father opposed it, the intelligent and studious Johanna still received careful guidance from Greek priests and mastered Latin and Greek. Johanna gradually grew up and fell in love with Count Grold (played by David Wenham). Shortly after, the war broke out and Grold rushed to the front line. Johanna, who narrowly escaped death, relied on her extraordinary courage and wisdom to disguise herself as a man to replace her deceased brother and enter the monastery, where she practiced medicine to treat the poor. Quickly, Johanna gained the trust of the Pope with her excellent medical skills, but immediately became embroiled in the dangerous whirlpool of politics and religion. In a series of political power struggles, Johanna finally ascended to the highest position in the Holy See and became the revered Pope of the generation. She concealed her female identity and ruled the Catholic Church for two years until she was overthrown due to her passionate love and pregnancy. The film "The Female Pope," directed by renowned German director Songk Waterman, is adapted from the globally popular novel of the same name by Donna Wuver Koros. This film combines gender and religion to present the thrilling and mysterious papal mystery that has been sealed for over 1100 years to the audience.
